The Torrey Hills Community Coalition (THCC) is almost as old as the Torrey Hills community itself.  The THCC began its existence when the community was first established as a community response to developer plans to build a Chevron Super Station across from homes and under the power lines leading to the SDG&E substation.  Residents, concerned with health and safety issues, organized to eventually defeat the proposed project.

In the spring of 2002, the THCC was revived, this time as a 501(c)3 tax exempt, tax deductible orgainziation with a following mission statement:

The Torrey Hills Community Coalition is committed to promoting and preserving a safe and livable environment for the residents of Torrey Hills.  The orgainziation's efforts are directed at:

  • Educating residents regarding health, safety and environmental issues that impact our community.
  • Organizing community members to address these issues as they arise.

At the time the THCC was re-established, residents were specifically concerned with the proposed construction of large biotechnology  labs on four lots within 1000 feet of the community elementary school.  Through organization and fund raising, the THCC was able to file lawsuits to protect the integraty of our community plan.  After 3 years of working the press, organizing the community and convincing the local school district to file lawsuits as well, the THCC prevailed in court and the communtiy plan remained in tact.

Today, the THCC is still responding to community concerns by challenging new developer plans to put over 800,000 square feet of multi-housing on the same four lots.  Many times the density allowed by the community plan.

With a grant from the San Diego Foundation, the THCC developed this website to inform and involve residents in the on-going effort to maintain and develop a livable and healthy community.
